John Salton

Taxation Manager, Private Client 

John is part of the Private Client Department and joined the firm in May 2008 having previously worked for Hyde Mahon Bridges. 

John advises on all aspects of taxation compliance and specialises in all aspects of taxation and accounting in relation to trusts and estates. 

Although John's clients are mainly trusts and estates, he also deals with many personal tax cases for high net worth individuals. 
 
Recent transactions include:

  • providing assistance in respect of a probate case involving the sale of a privately owned trading company, including a full analysis of the financial statements of the company;
  • preparing accounts throughout the administration period of many probate cases, to allow the executor's to monitor the realisation of assets and cash receipts;
  • advising executors in relation to successfully concluding enquiries raised by the Capital Taxes Office, into the financial history of the deceased individual. Negotiating and substantially reducing the potential penalties initially calculated by HMRC;
  • advising a privately owned company purchasing its own shares. Advising the outgoing shareholder of the income tax and capital gains tax implications of the sale;
  • providing advice to personal tax clients in respect of the operation of capital gains tax exemptions, where more than one property is owned and equalising married couples estates to best utilise income tax rates and allowances; and
  • advising a UK domiciled individual with regard to his return to the UK after a long period of working overseas; reviewing potential periods of residence in prior years; advising on the UK capital gains tax on the sale of a business property overseas.

John is a student member of the Society for Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).

John has many outside interests including motorsport (spectator), music, playing the guitar, walking in good scenery, films, good company, good food and ''is a dab hand with a wok in the kitchen''.
